“As a lifelong Delawarean, Democrat, 35 year resident of the 24th District, husband, and father, I know our state will get stronger by investing in our schools, protecting and building strong communities, and keeping technology, and a skilled workforce the focus of our new economy. As State Representative, I work hard every day to make sure that our children have the future we expect and they deserve.”

"

As we mark Labor Day in Delaware, we’ll keep fighting for our workers.

Our workforce has changed, and we as leaders of the Labor Committees in the Delaware General Assembly have recognized the critical need to modernize our efforts to grow and diversify Delaware’s workforce. This is especially important as the federal government has made historic investments in our nation’s deteriorating infrastructure, and the state has passed record capital budgets in back-to-back years...

"We need a skilled workforce that can meet these growing demands, as well as fill the labor shortage that already exists, and we have taken action this session."

I joined my colleagues Senator Jack Walsh, Kim Williams State Representative, 19th District and Sen. Nicole Poore in this Delaware Online op-ed reflecting on our legislative progress on behalf of working Delawareans on this Labor Day.

An Update on Delaware Relief Rebates

665,000 $300 checks, totaling almost $200 million or nearly 85% of the funds budgeted for the 2022 Delaware Relief Rebate Program, have now been sent to eligible Delaware residents.

These one-time direct payments are enabled by bipartisan legislation we passed earlier this year in response to the financial burden many residents faced as a result of rising fuel and grocery costs.

Efforts are still underway to identify additional qualifying adult residents that may not have been required to file a State tax return, such as seniors and lower-income residents. The Department of Finance has announced that all eligible Delaware residents will be mailed a check before mid-October or have the opportunity to apply for a check by that date.

“It is a tremendous honor representing the 24th District and the state of Delaware. Serving our district is a great responsibility and I look forward to working together to tackle every issue that comes our way.”

Human trafficking is a reprehensible practice that needs to be eliminated from our society. We need to use every tool at our discretion to combat it.

By establishing a lifetime ban for commercial drivers who engage in human trafficking -- which the General Assembly did by passing my and Sen. Stephanie Hansen's SB 223, which Governor John Carney signed into law today -- we are sending a clear message that Delaware won't tolerate this activity in our state. While I'm frustrated that such a law is necessary, I'm grateful that we are taking decisive action.

SB 223 brings Delaware into compliance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s “No Human Trafficking on Our Roads Act” by creating a lifetime disqualification for a commercial driver’s license if the individual engages in human trafficking while using a motor vehicle.
